About The CLPGS

The City of London Phonograph and Gramophone Society was formed in 1919 and is the oldest of its type on Earth.  It is dedicated to the study and enjoyment of early recorded sound, and while the bulk of our members live in the United Kingdom, there are also members in all continents other than Antarctica.

There are monthly members’ meetings in London, with others held regularly in other parts of the country, and presentations made at these cover all aspects of early music.  A 60+ page magazine, “For the Record” is posted to members quarterly.  In the summer of each year the Society’s “Phonofair” is held in the British Midlands, this being open to the public and a chance for members to meet and to add to collections from the sellers who attend.  Each autumn a larger three day event is held coincident with the Annual General Meeting of the Society, at which speakers can be heard on a wide variety of subjects, followed by a small auction of machines, records and other material.  The Society runs a bookshop dedicated to early recording, and produces the Reference Series of books with a discounted price to members.

Membership of the Society is £20 per year (payment may be made in US Dollars and Euros), and joining couldn’t be simpler – just click the following link http://www.clpgs.org.uk/Join_us_page.htm.
